California Surfing by Gomez Bueno @ VR Gallery

On the evening of 18th August 2012 VR Gallery hosted the opening of its latest exhibition California Surfing by Gomez Bueno.

Gomez has been living in Los Angeles since 1988, a city that inspires him and drives him crazy. He received a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from Universidad de La Laguna (Tenerife) and the Madrid University Complutense before heading out to La, La land, where he has become a well -known and celebrated artist, although he has not released his love of the underground, graffiti and protest.

The California Surfing Exhibition is on show until 17th October 2012.

I’m from California and grew up b the sea; therefore a lot of the imagery is very familiar to me. Although I wasn’t a surfer, I was a body surfer and all the colours and imagery remind me a lot of home. Being an artist myself I do like the playfulness of this art and the colours that have been used. My favourites are the pieces that use the cartoon imagery, I find them very interesting.

I think the art is great; I love surfing so it’s very relevant to me. We’re glad that we’re here at this time to see it. There’s a picture here which features a big wave and that’s my favourite! Saying that, I think they’re all good pieces.

Lillian – I think the art is very modern, maybe it’s not for everyone but I have to say it’s very interesting. It’s a great exhibition for those who love the water and surfing. The art is very different and is not something you will see anywhere else.
Michael – I think that it has a sense of advertising agency placards and promotional artwork. When you see the advertising in magazines and posters, this is the kind of art that goes into those.

This art is a good representation of surf and of the reality of surfing. It’s pretty hard to say which one I like the most as I love them all.

I think the exhibition is nice and colourful. It’s full and fresh and I like the ideas behind the pieces as it very much reflects Phuket at this time of the year.

VR Gallery is the successor to the mini gallery that existed at Mom Tri’s Boathouse for many years. The Boathouse gallery served as a venue for local and visiting artists.
