Marine Turtle Shelter & Education Center Press Conference

Marine Turtle Shelter & Education Center Press ConferenceKhao Marine Turtle Foundation and JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa held a press conference on Saturday 29th arch 2014 to announce a project that will see the resort be home to a Marine Turtle Shelter & Education Center, the first to be opened in Phuket, and also the first to be opened in a resort in the Asia-Pacific region.

The press conference saw a number of VIP guests in attendance along with Phuket and Bangkok media.

The main purpose for opening the centre is to provide a home for injured turtles that are unable to return to the sea. Unfortunately, Phuket Marine Biology Center is now very over crowded with injured turtles, and this new center will help alleviate some of the pressure on their facility.

The project was actually started over a year ago when the relevant documents were submitted to the Phuket Marine Biology Center and Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, last month the official letter of approval was received from them and it is now hoped that facility will officially open at Songkran 2015.

Here’s what JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa General Manager had to say during the event:

Marine Turtle Shelter & Education Center Press Conference
“From October of this year we’re going to start building a shelter for turtles within this hotel, and today’s event is to announce this project to the general public and the press. We’re extremely excited about this project and that we are going a step further in protecting the turtles in this region.
“I think that opening a shelter such as this within the hotel is very positive. Firstly, we will raise the awareness of the risk of the turtles in Thailand and around the world to our clients, employees and for the community in Phuket. I believe that it is going to be really exciting and that it’s the right move in supporting the protecting of sea turtles in Thailand.”
