Set within the grounds of the luxurious five star Angsana Laguna Phuket Resort, and only a few meters away from the pristine white sands of Bang Tao Beach, Baan Talay Thai Restaurant is the most popular of the resort’s seven restaurants, priding itself on offering a some of the best fresh local seafood specialties along with a range of traditional Thai dishes.
The contemporary style restaurant, with its Thai style architecture and stylish Thai styled wooden panelled interior, offers indoor seating for 90, which includes 2 two private dining areas with Chinese style round spinning tables which are perfect for groups of 6 – 11 people, as well as a large terrace, which can seat up to 30, and from where diners can enjoy a pleasant sea breeze whilst taking in breathtaking views of the Andaman Sea. Being located directly next to the resorts lagoon it is the perfect choice for those staying within the entire Laguna area as the restaurant is easily accessible via their regular boat shuttle service.
The atmosphere at Baan Talay is very relaxed and informal, and Assistant F & B Manager Sompong Saetan has done a great job in training the waiting team on how to treat its multi-national guests, and what guests of such a high class resort should expect from a restaurant of this calibre.
With over 20 years experience in the kitchen, Head Thai Chef – Wannee guides her team of 8 highly trained chefs from behind the open show kitchen as they prepare fantastic tasting dishes with an emphasis on high-quality, fresh ingredients at reasonable prices, those prices being remarkably cheaper than some of the neighbouring beachfront restaurants such as ‘Lotus’. Furthermore, unlike most of the Island’s Thai restaurants, Ban Talay is an authentic Thai & seafood restaurant with a twist that accounts for foreigners taste palates. However, Chef Wannee and her team are more than happy to make it “local style” for those who enjoy their Thai food with more of a spicy kick.
As mentioned previously Baan Talay prides itself on its seafood specialties and the restaurant is currently running a fantastic promotion for its ‘Grilled Seafood Basket’, which features a tantalising variety of fresh Andaman seafood hand-picked by Chef Wannee herself. A basket for 2 contains the best fresh rock lobster (the most flavoursome of lobsters), a blue crab, 2 tiger prawns, 2 oysters and 2 squid. A basket for 4 contains double the aforementioned ingredients plus a succulent red snapper.
Prior to being grilled, the seafood is marinated in a special Baan Talay sauce, the ingredients of which includes garlic, coriander, salt, pepper and a few other secret ingredients which chef Wannee did not want to disclose. Showing her true professionalism the seafood is marinated for just the right amount of time ensuring it doesn’t become dry and tough.
The entire contents of the basket, which was beautifully presented, were grilled to perfection being moist and tender; the natural sweetness of the seafood had been enhanced by the grilling, and the natural taste was further improved by slight hints of the ingredients of the marinade.
To compliment the seafood, the basket is served with four tasty, homemade dipping sauces; tamarind, garlic & pepper, Thai seafood sauce and chilli oil.
